Phantom power waste is the electricity your home uses while you are asleep and nothing is switched on. Chargers left in the wall, a TV waiting for the remote, a printer that never quite powers down, a games console holding itself ready for an instant boot. Individually each one is trivial. Added up across a house, studies from national energy labs consistently put it somewhere between 5% and 10% of a residential electricity bill.

Where phantom power waste actually hides
People reach for phone chargers first, and phone chargers are close to the bottom of the list. A modern unplugged-but-connected charger draws a fraction of a watt. The real offenders are devices with a network chip, a display, or a boot process they want to skip:
- Set-top boxes and DVRs — the worst by a wide margin, often 15-25W around the clock because they never truly sleep.
- Games consoles in rest mode — 10W or more if you left the "stay connected" option on.
- Desktop PCs and monitors — a few watts each, but they add up in a home office.
- Printers — an inkjet wakes periodically to run a maintenance cycle whether you print or not.
- Soundbars, AV receivers, smart speakers — always listening means always drawing.
- Microwaves and ovens — the clock display costs more over a year than the cooking does in a month for light users.
Measure before you optimise
Guessing is how people spend forty pounds on smart plugs to save four. A cheap plug-in energy monitor costs less than a takeaway and tells you the truth in a weekend. Plug it in between the socket and the device, leave it overnight, read the standby figure in the morning.
Do the maths once: watts × 24 × 365 ÷ 1000 = kWh per year. Multiply by your unit rate. A 20W set-top box is roughly 175 kWh a year — real money in every market. A 0.3W charger is about 2.6 kWh, which is noise. Now you know which battles are worth fighting.
The fixes, cheapest first
Switched power strips. Group the entertainment cluster or the desk cluster onto one strip and flip it at night. This is the highest-return change available and it costs almost nothing. Keep anything that genuinely needs to stay on — a router, a DVR mid-recording, a fridge — on a separate always-on socket.
Turn off the settings that cause it. Most of the draw is opt-in. Disable "Quick Start" on your TV, switch a console from rest mode to full shutdown, turn off Wake-on-LAN on a PC you never wake remotely, and enable eco or deep-sleep mode where the manual offers it. These take one evening and cost nothing at all.
Smart plugs with schedules. Worth it for clusters you genuinely forget, like a home office that should be dead from 19:00 to 08:00. Note the irony: a smart plug itself draws about 1W, so only use them where the saving is clearly larger.
Unplug the seasonal stuff. The spare TV in the guest room, the second printer, the exercise bike with a display. Anything you use less than monthly should not be in a socket at all.
What to leave alone
Do not switch off your router if anyone in the house relies on the connection, and do not put a fridge, freezer, medical device, alarm system or anything with a clock you depend on behind a switched strip. Modern TVs handle being fully cut just fine, but check whether yours needs to be powered for overnight firmware updates.
Also resist the urge to unplug things at the wall constantly to save a watt. Sockets and plugs wear out, and the saving on a 0.2W device will never pay for a replacement socket. Target the double-digit draws.
A realistic result
An average home that tackles the top three or four offenders typically cuts 300 to 600 kWh a year. It shows up quietly as a smaller bill rather than a dramatic drop, which is exactly why phantom power waste survives in most houses for decades.
